Artist Statement (2024)

If asked what kind of artist I am, I’d say I’m a watercolorist, though I also use oil paint, graphite, pen, and pastel. I’d also have to bite my tongue, though, since I really consider myself more of an illustrator than an artist. This isn’t to say that I don’t like cerebral works that bring to attention the varied, awe-inspiring, and powerful forces in nature that produce patterns that reflect each other in cosmic and minuscule ways, only that I primarily like telling stories. My works are meant to both show and evoke emotion, telling the viewer a story and hopefully touching their heart at the same time, if only through the enjoyment of a well-painted picture. My illustrations are based on my own experiences and interests, be they childhood delights or religion-based allegory. Above all, I am interested in portraying the human experience that I and those around me have known, sharing our stories through paint and pencil.
