She has an associate’s degree from Brookdale Community College and graduated from the University of South Carolina Beaufort with a bachelor’s degree in studio art. Szalc’s artistic medium of choice is watercolor, though she is also proficient in graphite, ink, and oil, all of which she applies to her work in illustration. Szalc has been featured both in juried exhibitions at the USCB Sea Islands Center Gallery and in the university’s yearly publication, The Pen. Outside of school, her work has been included in SEISMA Magazine, the All Things Considered show at Las Laguna Art Gallery, and the Small Works 2023 exhibition at Main Street Arts in Clifton Springs, NY. Aside from art, Szalc enjoys birdwatching, listening to audiobooks, and examining the little patterns found throughout nature.
Artist Statement (2024)
If asked what kind of artist I am, I’d say I’m a watercolorist, though I also use oil paint, graphite, pen, and pastel. I’d also have to bite my tongue, though, since I really consider myself more of an illustrator than an artist. This isn’t to say that I don’t like cerebral works that bring to attention the varied, awe-inspiring, and powerful forces in nature that produce patterns that reflect each other in cosmic and minuscule ways, only that I primarily like telling stories. My works are meant to both show and evoke emotion, telling the viewer a story and hopefully touching their heart at the same time, if only through the enjoyment of a well-painted picture. My illustrations are based on my own experiences and interests, be they childhood delights or religion-based allegory. Above all, I am interested in portraying the human experience that I and those around me have known, sharing our stories through paint and pencil.
